Zumba Questions

Q. What are the benefits of Zumba?

A. Zumba is fun, different and effective. It's so fun you will want to do it everyday. It's been called "exercise in disguise." The variety of music you'll hear in a Zumba class keeps it fresh, exciting and a little different everytime so you'll never get bored. Zumba is an effective cardio fitness class that will have you burning approximately 500 calories in an hour! Most importantly, you'll stick with it because it's so much fun.

Q. What should I wear to Zumba?

A. Zumba is about freedom. So, wear comfortable workout clothes that allow you to move freely and an aerobic/crosstrainer type shoe. But, don't forget...feel free to be as cute as you want to be!

Q. What type of shoe should I wear?

A. Shoe choice is very subjective. You have to try on several styles until you find the shoe that works for your foot. With that being said, you want to look for a shoe that offers your foot the support it needs, but pick one that doesn't have a lot of tread. If you can find one that has a pivot point, that would be great. Some styles to try are Nike Shox, Ryka, Capezio Dance Sneaker. Find what works for you.

Q. Do I need any equipment?

A. Just bring a towel and water to drink.

Q. I'm not a great dancer. Can I Zumba??

A. Yes! Zumba is for everyone. Don't worry about being a good dancer. The goal is to have fun, keep moving and get fit. No one is judging you. You can be free to release your stress, and just get silly!

Q. Am I too old/young to Zumba?

A. Are you kidding? Everyone can Zumba. It's the perfect workout because you can move as much or as little as you want to. Of course, with all workouts you should check with your doctor to be safe, especially if you have any known issues.

Q. How often should I do Zumba and how soon will I see results?

A. I totally understand this question. Like me, most people want "microwave" results. How often you do Zumba is a matter of personal choice and how much you enjoy it. I believe it's good to have a variety in your workout to keep you interested and motivated.

Results are a matter of how much you put into it—you will burn more calories if you increase your intensity. It's also a matter of what else you are doing to get results. The Centers for Disease Control recommend a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate activity on most days or 20 minutes of vigorous activity for 20 minutes three times per week. Adding Zumba, or any cardio-vascular exercise to your routine will help you see results sooner. So, make sure you are moving through the rest of the week as well. Walking, swimming, biking, or even doing your Zumba moves at home are all great ways to keep burning calories throughout the week. And, making changes to your nutrition habits (I won't say the d-word) will also help you acheive your fitness goals.
